Bangkok, Thailand – On Wednesday, March 29, 2023, Dr. Tadashi Nakasu, a researcher at the College of Population Studies and a member of the SATREPS DREAM Area-BCM Project, along with students from Chulalongkorn University and a Project Assistant, visited the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok, Thailand to participate in the Networking Event: Multi-Stakeholder Roles for Strengthening Space Applications and Sustainable Development, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) with active participation from institutional partners in the region. The objective of this event was to enable effective collaboration and communication between space agencies and universities to bridge the knowledge gap, lead to more impactful outcomes, enhance partnerships with national, regional and global stakeholders, and support the advancement of space science and technology research, development, and utilization in Asia and the Pacific. Additionally, the event aimed to encourage young people to promote innovative applications of space and digital technologies for the future of the region.
During the event, space agencies and representative universities gave a ten-minute presentation regarding strengthening space applications and sustainable development. Mr. Manapat Weramongkolkul, a student from the International School of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, presented the perspective of how youth in Thailand could use satellite data in their projects to advance research and solve problems in interdisciplinary areas.
Later, Dr. Tadashi Nakasu presented some findings from community research on Area Business Continuity Management in the target area of sub-district level, as well as future applications that would help to mitigate disasters. The presentation went smoothly.
SATREPS DREAM Area-BCM would like to express gratitude to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for including the project in this event as it provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, views, and operational tools and systems for the innovative use of geospatial information and related technologies. The event also enhanced the understanding of national space agencies and universities in the region on how space science and technologies can advance progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their countries and the region.
The SATREPS DREAM (Area-BCM) Project is a joint research project between Japan and Thailand under the SENDAI framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The project is schemed to launch a sustainable economic growth platform through disaster resilience enhancement at Industry complexes in Thailand and input to ISO/TC292 by the year 2023.
